Exclusive Burlesque Fairytales screening in Cannes

Set against the back drop of the old town. BURLESQUE FAIRYTALES had an exclusive screening during the Cannes Film Festival 2008.
On board a sailing boat in the harbour, the film played to invited guests at twilight, under a full moon.
A fairytale setting indeed for the film which has been described as
‘Very powerful…’
‘Dark and compelling…beautiful imagery…’
‘One of the best and most original films I’ve seen, ever.’

After beginning principle photography a year ago on a beach with a mermaid, BURLESQUE FAIRYTALES 35mm feature film is now in the can! Since last January, we've filmed in six exterior locations including Kew Gardens London, featuring as Death's hot house and National Trust land at Frencham Ponds as our baron heath, enchanted forest and lake in which an animated carp talks with our lead actress.
We've also shot on our sets at Shepperton Film Studios including Neptune's underwater world and the Ice Queen's Palace with ballerinas from the English National Ballet and contemporary dancers from LABAN dance academy.
And to complete the film, we've just shot in St Paul's London Crypt, our theatre bar and at the Union Chapel Church as a theatre of purgatory with our lead characters played by Benedict Cumberbatch (Golden Globe winner 'Atonement') Stephen Campbell Moore ('The History Boys') Barbara Flynn (Miss Potter) Sophie Hunter (Vanity Fair) Charity Wakefield (Sense and Sensibility) Kevin Howarth ('Last Horror Show') and Jim Carter (The Golden Compass).
BURLESQUE FAIRYTALES is set one evening in a 1930's theatre where all is not as it seems. During the show, five fairytales are performed on the stage, each delving into their own rich exterior film worlds. At first the audience think sorcery is at play but it is soon revealed that a far greater power is at work.
This is writer director Susan Luciani's debut feature film. Over 200 film professionals have donated their time and talents to help create this film with her along with industry facilities Panavision, Pinewood Studios, Soho Images, Movietech, Kodak. Moving Picture Company and Panalux.

Fairytale Magic Captured on Film
13 shoot days, over 50 actors, dancers and acrobats, 14 sets, 6 exterior locations = half of BURLESQUE FAIRYTALES, double barrel's debut feature film, in the can!
So far, we've shot all the five fairytales that play out one evening in a theatre in 1930's London. Characters include Death, the Shepherdess and Chimney Sweep and the Mermaid with Mona Hammond (10 000BC Dir: Roland Emmerich) playing Death's wife, Anna Lanyon (LEGEND Dir: Ridley Scott) as The Queen of Hearts and Tony award winning Lindsay Duncan (StarWars Episode 1 Dir: George Lucas) bringing our Ice Queen to life.
Thanks to fantastic support from all cast, our dedicated crew and the industry
companies who continue to back us, we're now looking forward to our final week
of principle photography later this year. This shoot will take place in a theatre
auditorium, which is in our film, purgatory.

Burlesque Fairytales – we’ve turned over!
Burlesque Fairytales, the debut feature film from double barrel productions, has begun principle photography.
Shoot Day One saw many of the crew returning from DOLLS, back together to film on a boulder strewn beach on the south coast.
Featuring 3 fisherman and a mermaid, the shoot saw the completion of the beachside scenes for the fifth fairytale in the film.
The day was blessed with rather unseasonal sunny skies (just in time for our mermaid to make her appearance on camera) and despite battling in-coming tides and the danger of being cut off on the headland, the team successfully completed six script pages – that’s six minutes of the finished film in the can.
double barrel would like to congratulate all involved for getting us off to a flying start.

*******PRESS RELEASE*******
To coincide with the London Film Festival, double barrel has productions premiered their debut short film DOLLS on the river Thames.
In collaboration with luxury cruise boat, The Magna Carta, the film screened to cast and crew set against the backdrop of Hampton Court Palace.
DOLLS is a dark fairytale revealing how unconditional love can unravel a lifetime of unhappiness. The film deliberately blurs the line between the real and the fantastical, mixing life action with puppetry, bringing the theatrical experience to the big screen in a dance of actors, camera and lighting.
140 people came together to donate their time and talents to see the short to fruition including celebrated British actors Charles Dance, Joanna Lumley and Denis Lawson.
DOLLS is director Susan Luciani’s first 35mm short film. Screened on BBC and SKY TV to critical acclaim, it has also been officially selected at International Film festivals in L.A. San Francisco, Cyprus, Italy, Spain, Japan, Paris and Africa: ‘Dolls is extraordinary, the film has a spectacularly different, significant, coloured voice. I’ve not seen a short like it before,’ Jeremy Howe, Head of Short Films, BBC.
