Seattle Independent Film Festival has honoured Derek Suter BSC, the director of photography for British Independent film Burlesque Fairytales, with the award for Best Cinematography. Burlesque Fairytales had its American Premiere as it screened during the festival week in June 2009 and was chosen for the award from over 90 films featured in this year’s Seattle event. Festival Director Clint Berquist says ‘Burlesque Fairytales was one of the first films that I screened this year in the process and it set the bar pretty high. It is a very beautifully shot movie with incredibly engaging cinematography. Typically films that are as visually interesting can end up sacrificing story on some level, but I was really happy that wasn't the case with Burlesque Fairytales.”
Following the success of her short film Dolls, Writer Director Susan Luciani conceived the idea for her seventh screenplay that would become her debut feature film, Burlesque Fairytales. ‘‘ Working with Susan was amazing, she has such dedication and talent’ says Derek Suter BSC. ‘To produce this film on a small budget, with so many professional people wanting to be a part of it required total commitment. I am glad that it is getting the recognition it deserves, and I would like to thank the people from the Seattle Festival for giving me the award for Best Cinematography. Susan and her team have worked so hard and her dedication is to be admired. With her skill and energy I think this young director will go all the way.’
The award at Seattle Independent Film Festival follows more festival success for Burlesque Fairytales with the film being chosen to screen at the final night Gala of Toronto Female Eye Festival in March as well as being officially selected to screen at KIN Festival, Granada, Notting Hill, Philadelphia and Strasbourg International Film Festivals later in the year. Burlesque Fairytales has also been awarded ‘Outstanding Achievement’ at SkyFest. Susan Luciani says “it’s great for all my cast and crew who had such faith in creating this story with us. Despite shooting on a shoe string we’ve made a beautiful film and got the awards to prove it! I look forward to sharing Burlesque Fairytales with more festival goers around the world and securing a distributor so the film can reach an even wider audience.”
